The Story Behind Rock & Rhyme

After living in Australia for 4 years, I moved back home to California, living with my mom, sister and her 2 kids. Whether I was working out, cooking or writing, my 10 year old nephew would get so annoyed when I played music because he couldn’t hear people on YouTube playing video games. I played Bob Marley, The Beatles, Prince, Michael Jackson, Frank Sinatra, Madonna, Queen and every other artist that you will find in Rock & Rhyme, and he had no idea who any of those artists were.

I told my sister I was calling social services!!! This is a musical crime!!! How does he not know who these artists are?

Come a year later, as a mother myself, I was so tired of reading this one book about an octopus’s birthday that Myles always wanted to read over and over again. We had 100 books, but he only crawled and grabbed this one book.  It is a great book! I recommend it, but I realized he always grabbed it because it was the only book he could play with and interact with it. He went back to the same book time and time again because it was more than just me reading words, he could engage on the pages as I told the story.  Over and over and over and over….

This is when the concept of Rock & Rhyme popped in my head.

I thought I could make a fun book about music for kids to love and want to read over and over, as well as the adult!

Kids will be stimulated and eager to learn about each artist because they there will be a surprise or something fun to do when they turn the page. We adults, will be excited reading and describing each illustration to them over and over because it is something we love and know like Abbey Road, Woodstock, Live Aid, or Madonna Vogue-ing.

I have read this book to my son for a long time now, yet each time we read it, it is a different experience. I sometimes play a song by the artist to see if he recognizes it.  Sometimes I tell him stories about how I used to dance in my backyard with my sister as a child, listening to Madonna. Or the time I saw the Rolling Stones with his Nana, and we danced our butts off! Other times I ask him to tell me what his favorite song is by the artist when we flip the page. Sometimes he stands up and shakes his hips like Elvis, or times pretends to play the piano or guitar. When it comes to The Beatles pop up spread, he thinks it’s funny to sing, “We all live in a Purple Submarine”, He knows it’s yellow, but does this on purpose. Yay 5-year-olds 🙂
