The Unattainable Girl: The Story of the Pistachio

I have been 100 percent single… ALONE, whatever you want to call it, going on now almost 7 long years. ย I would have never thought of myself as being one who would go this long without finding someone to deeply admire or attempt to love.ย  I tried for years in America with no luck and assumed for sure luck would be on my side once living in Australia.

HA! NO.

Between the two countries, I have been on well over a ย hundred of dates, with more thanย a hundred men duringย this time period, ย and only two percent of those men ever even sparked my interest.ย  Furthermore,ย  even fewerย ever led to aย ย second date before I said to myself, “EHHHHHH .UMM. NO”, and kept on trucking.

I AMย proactive with my love life. I approach guys when out, Iย Tinder, I do Match, I get set up. ย I want love, I want a best friend, ย I want to enjoy a man on an emotional and physical level, of course.ย My intentions AREย all there!!ย

ย Guys AREย interested in me, guys DO likeย me,ย I AMย wanted by many….

So then what the hell is the problem???

What is so terribly wrong with me that I am unable to develop interest, feelings, or even a bit of intrigue about someone of the opposite sex for more than 56 seconds?

How canย I have such aย TAKE-CHARGE approach to finding love, but subconsciously never actually give any guy a chance to ever make it happen?ย

ย ……………………………………………

The Story of the Pistachio

One day, I ย was sitting at my dining room table andย texting back some guyย I had no interest in, go figure.ย ย As I sat there, simultaneouslyย deleting guys messages one by one from online sites, ย I decided to grab a handful of pistachios from the jarย on the centerpiece right in front of me. While ignoring other texts from the regular hopefuls, I began cracking open the pistachio shells and enjoying each delicious treat. ย Some were almost completely open, with the pistachioย just barely staying inside the shell. Othersย were a bit more closed, but just needed a little tug or two to get open. ย And then there were pistachios that were almost completely shut, ย looking really annoying to open, but definitely sized upย still doable.

A few minutes went by and I was now nearing the bottom of the jar. ย  I noticed that all the easy to get pistachios were no longer there, and the only ones with closed shells were left. Ugh, NOT the Closed Shelled!ย These are the onesย everyone throwsย back in the jar because they are impossible to open. The ones where if you want to get inside that shell, you will have to risk breaking a tooth or slicingย your finger open to even touch that pistachio. ย THOSEย ones that are the inconceivableย challengeย with shells so tightly closed, they ultimatelyย become unattainable.

Then it dawned on me…

SHIT.

I AMย THATย PISTACHIO

WAIT, what!? When did this happen!? How did this happen!?

LOVE

HEARTBREAK

TIMEย

Yeaaah… that ALL HAPPENED

I can remember being 19 years old and falling in love for the first time. The guyย really wasn’t anything special (sorry dude, you just weren’t) but a friend had set me up and within days I was head over heels in love. I was 100 percent open and available for love. There were no requirements of the guy or expectations from him. I was not thinking about our life together 10 years from then. It was just me.. inย love..and letting it all in.

I was that pistachio you find without a shell just there to indulge,ย with no rough edges to get through, or shells to break…. just there with an open heart, andย delightful.

Capture

This boy ended upย cheating on me, breaking my heart… and I remember feeling a pain in my chest that I never knew could even exist. ย Though we all recover and probably never think about, your first heartbreak is something you never forget. You might not even remember that pricks name by now, but I bet you can still remember how he madeย you feel. That emotion is embedded into your memory till the end of time, and without even realizing it ever even happened…. ย you now have a shell.

I have fallenย in love 4 times since then, and obviously with each one comes another heartbreak. Closing my shell millimeter after millimeter after each one.
Becoming at one time or another every type of pistachio I touched within the jar.

By the time I was ready for my last relationship, my shell was already 3/4 closed. ย Iย was still relatively obtainable, but some time and effort was needed before I would let my walls down. And finally….I did. ย After a few month’s time, the shell was gone and I allowed myself to fall so deeply and far in love it was like I was 19 again. ย But there was a problem..ย I wasn’t 19, I was 27. I now hadย cares in the world, I now hadย to think about the future. ย At that moment when you realize you are madly in love with someone yet in a relationship that is set up to fail, all you begin to see is an expiration date in his eyes and your heart shattering across the floor.

I was now that shell-less pistachio that I had dropped on the ground moments earlier.. that will get crushed into pieces the moment I stand up.

That introspection and that break-up, was by far one of the most painful experiences I have ever had. Long, drawn-out, and quite ugly, it made my life unbearable to live for months. I made a promise to myself during that time, that I would never put myself in the same situation again. ย I would never wear my heart on my sleeve while setting myself up for failure at the same time.

I would never let loveย hurt me that hardย again.

And at that moment, it was as of my brain connected with my heart, and I have been completely rewired ever since…

I became a brand new pistachio.

But with a shell that was protectively shut.

Now almost 7 years later, the pain of all my past relationships are all but memories, as I feel like I have forgotten what heartbreak and love even feels like. Within all thisย time, ย I have becomeย the strongest, whole, most delicious pistachio I think I have ever been, but ironically covered with the most resistantย shell I have ever encountered. ย Without even realizing, I ย had become that closed shelled pistachio that many desireย to open, but neverย can.

It is amazing how wellย defense mechanisms can work when you need them to, but apparently do not know when to turn offย when that’s no longer the case.ย ย This is where the majority of my extreme pickiness, my unrealistic standards and my quick response to always say “next” come into play.

America or Australia, it really really doesn’t matter where I live.ย I know, that if ย I keep going at this rate, no one will ever be able to break open my shell and enjoy all this pistachio has to offer.

ย But now that I know this, how do I fix it?

Well, I pride myself in having high standards, as everyone should, but there is a fine line between having standards and just being flat out ridiculous.ย It isย now time to find a balance between upholding the justifiableย standards and letting go of everything else.

ย  What once was something I just considered a simple snack, ย the pistachio is now a strange symbolย of who I was and who I have comeย to be when it comes to love. I decided to share this because I don’t think I am the only person who works this way, I am not the only annoyingly closed pistachio. ย I think many people build walls over the years after each relationship whether they realize it or not, then struggle to wonder why they are alone and why they thinkย everyone they meet is an idiot. It is hard to remember the fact thatย nobody is perfectย when perfect isย the only thing weย are unrealistically looking for.ย It is so effortlessย just to keep saying,”Oh that personย talked funny” “That personย had a weird thing with his hair” “That personย didn’t text me back right away”. ย It is just so easy to blame everybodyย weย meet for the reason weย are alone, when the real answerย lies within the walls weย have confined ourselves in.

How are weย ever going to see who a person really is with walls SO HIGH,ย that 99 percent of our judgment is blurred?

It’s time for all of us closed shelled peopleย to begin letting others in a little bit more, open our shell. Not become an “easy to open” pistachio. ย No no, no.ย I am sure being easyย is frowned upon even in the nut world.

But instead, adjust ourย shells just a smidgeย more open..

Lower our walls just an inch down..

Allowing for the pistachio.. and the ย girl, ย to once again, becomeย attainable

P.S I hope you never look at aย pistachio the same ever again ๐Ÿ™‚

You are welcome.

  2. love it, you’re amazing!! ๐Ÿ˜˜๐Ÿ˜˜

  3. Yes yes yes! Everything about this post is yes to me. It reminds me of a quote by Helen Schucman, “Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.” Good luck on this journey! I know the feeling, and attribute it to an early, failing relationship as well. But I like to think that my life was meant for more than one great love… like adventure, writing, friendship, risk… and I bet yours is too.

    1. Thank you for your kind words! I really love that quote by the way ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Love the metaphor. I found it true it all aspects of relationships. When I sit in front of my pistachio bowl I always root for the most open nuts. They are ripe and ready just like me. Love your piece.

  5. This is wonderful!!!!

  6. This made me both laugh and cry. I have read it 3 times now and love more each time. Thank you for writing this!

  7. Wow, great analogy. I can definitely say that I’m a closed pistachio, but it’s not that easy to open up the shell. It takes a lot of strength and trust. But day by day I’m trying. Hopefully it works out for you also. ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. Beautifully written.
I would be selective if I had all you have to offer.
I love your blog and hearing your stories. Thanks for sharing.

  9. I thought you were going to say that the closed pistachios were the guys no one bothers to go to, but you got me! hehe
    Great post anyway

    Cheers!

    1. haha sorry did not mean to be tricky! Glad you enjoyed it ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. This is the story of my life… haha if you are a pistachio, I must be brussel sprouts -_-

  11. Thanks for visiting my site and liking my post on How to Find Joy. ๐Ÿ™‚ I love your take on relationships (I can so relate) and I look forward to reading more!

  12. I love your writing style hehe :p and you speak such truths..i can 100% relate.

  13. Actually I thought you were going to say that the men you couldn’t be bothered with were the closed pistachios; that they were too much effort to get to know.

  14. What a brilliant post. Really enjoyed this – well done! (P.S I’m 33, and I’ve been single … for 33 years so I think you’re doing OK!)

    1. hah thank you so much! When you look at it that way, I guess I am ๐Ÿ™‚

  15. A lovely piece. At least you were able to do an introspection and share, most people don’t get to cross that bridge. ๐Ÿ™‚ And a big thanks to your ‘muse’ – Pistachios.

  16. So so true” I am definitely with you in the closed pistachio pot!

But little by little we can do it, give someone a chance to crack the shell and you never know someone might be tough but also awesome enough to break through the shell. x

  17. Amen sister.

  18. Oh dear, I think I’m a closed shell pistachio too! I am far from perfect but find myself thinking…..oh I’m not sure about his….teeth/body shape/voice etc!!

  19. I think you should have a little gold pistachio on a chain as a necklace! This was so sweet and lovely, I think I might buy some pistachios at the next opportunity and devour the lot! <3

      1. I remember you and pistachios – but I’m muddled in my memory, I thought there was a part here about goats crapping out coffee beans! Wasn’t it you who did a very funny blog about that most expensive bean passed through an exclusive goat? Or am I dreadfully mistaken? ๐Ÿ˜‰ xx

      2. Oh the pistachio stories will keep on coming ๐Ÿ™‚
haha and you are talking about my Bali post where a type of cat poops out the coffee beans! Good memory ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. haha ๐Ÿ™‚

  20. So descriptive! I think it captures the relationship cycle perfectly! But donโ€™t worry, youโ€™ll find your nutcracker!!!

  21. Great way of looking at things – Iโ€™ll remember your story every time I see a closed pistachio!

  22. Glad to hear a pistachio has helped you realise and now you are trying to create a balance. All the best for your journey.

  23. I totally know how you feel! I was married for 8 years before going through a really bad divorce. And then ever since Iโ€™ve been the same way as you!

  24. I was once a pistachio too. Then I met my nutcracker ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ
